The following is a list of the Top 10 health advancements of 2008. I know there are many other possible candidates for this list. This is my version of the highlights that made 2008 unique.
The Mayo Clinic Places One Foot in the Door of the Real World
Miracles continue and it appears that the Mayo Clinic is attempting to go into the 21st century with at least a finger on the dietary pulse of truth. In May they put out a press release specifying that “Thousands of research studies have recorded how the oils known as omega-3 fats can benefit the cardiovascular system, particularly amongst people detected with coronary artery illness … The most engaging evidence for the cardiovascular advantage supplied by omega-3 fats comes from 3 big regulated trials of 32,000 individuals randomized to receive omega-3 fatty acid supplements including DHA and EPA … These trials showed reductions in cardiovascular events of 19 percent to 45 percent. In general, these findings suggest that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, whether from dietary sources or fish oil supplements, should be increased, particularly in those with or at risk for coronary artery disease.”
The advancement is not that fish oils treat and avoid heart disease; we’ve understood that for years. The breakthrough is that the vitamin-and-alternative-health-hating Mayo Center is telling the world to take fish oil supplements to prevent cardiovascular disease. That symbolizes the initial stages of a paradigm shift of magnitude.
Bone Health Is One Key to Longevity
Bones can no longer be thought about only in regards to fracture risk and osteoporosis. Bones are continuously bring to life brand-new cells and these cells play important functions in metabolic process and immunity. When bone cells get inflamed not only does this promote excess bone loss it straight triggers fat cells to multiply in white adipose tissue – which plainly describes why women get weight after menopause as well as the key to stopping the problem.
The highlight study of the year was a comprehensive gene analysis carried out on one of the world’s healthiest older men (he was 113 at the time, recently diing at 114). Scientist expected to discover genetic benefits enabling him to live a long life. Much to their surprise, he didn’t have any “much better genes” at all – he had better bones! Because he consumed a diet including fresh fruit and vegetables (bone anti-inflammatory nutrients) and stayed really active (revitalizing bone health), and the reason he had much better bones was.
Needless to say, the disastrous bone drugs were not part of his plan.
Grape Seed Extracts Stop Alzheimer’s Plaque
This year’s research showed that “regular” brain aging is rather an irregular process; with the loss of psychological capability, intelligence, and memory directly associating with how many plaque-like brain tangles happen. At the far end of the spectrum is Alzheimer’s illness – an issue with brain plaque frustrating healthy brain function. However, there are a thousand tones of grey en route to this issue, and each step in the incorrect instructions is marked by ever-increasing levels of brain plaque.
Red grape seed extracts showed that they could stop brain plaque from forming. The new research revealed that brain cells should first be punched in the nose by some type of tension, get irritated, and then start to express specific genes that promote plaque formation.
